THE ROLE OF SURFACE PREPARATION IN A PERFECT COATING FINISH

A flawless powder coat starts long before the powder ever hits the part. The difference between “good” and “showroom” is surface prep—cleanliness, profile, and pretreatment that let the coating anchor, level, and last.

1

Degreasing & Decontamination

Oils, silicones, and polishing compounds sabotage adhesion. We strip them using targeted solvents and alkaline cleaners, followed by DI rinses so the surface is truly clean—not just wiped down.

2

Media Blasting & Anchor Profile

Blasting removes oxides and creates a controlled micro-profile so powder can mechanically lock in. We choose media (aluminum oxide, glass bead, garnet) and pressure to suit the substrate and finish level.

3

Masking & Plugging

Threads, mating faces, grounding points, and bores are precision-masked with high-temp tapes and silicone plugs. Accurate keep-outs preserve tolerances and assembly fit after cure.

4

Pretreatment / Conversion Coatings

For superior corrosion resistance, metals receive conversion coatings (e.g., iron/zinc phosphate or chromate-free alternatives). This step promotes chemical bonding, improves salt-spray performance, and stabilizes the substrate.

5

Outgassing & Pre-Bake

Porous castings and weldments can trap gases and moisture. A controlled prebake drives volatiles out, preventing pinholes and fish-eyes so your final coat flows smooth and glassy.

6

Clean Handling & QC

After prep, we handle parts with lint-free gloves and isolate them from dust. Final blow-off, tack-cloth, and ground verification ensure consistent film build and even charge transfer during application.

7

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Skipping degrease, blasting too smooth or too aggressive, poor masking, and no prebake are the big four. Each leads to early failure: chipping, peeling, underfilm corrosion, or texture defects.

Results You Can See

With proper prep, powder lays flatter, colors appear deeper, edges stay crisp, and durability skyrockets. That’s how we deliver true luxury-grade finishes—every single time.
